Human Rights!
From the genocide in Rwanda and the aftermath of Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait to the persecution of Uyghurs in China, the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and human-rights abuses in the United States, Roth recounts the investigations, confrontations, successes, failures, and difficult decisions that shaped his career.
But the book goes beyond recounting crises.
One of its central subjects is how human-rights advocacy actually works, how researchers gather evidence, how abuses are brought into public view, how organizations pressure governments, and how the strategy Roth calls “shaming” can be used to make governments confront international criticism.
It also explores the difficult realities behind advocacy: What happens when governments refuse to cooperate? What happens when exposing an abuse doesn't immediately change anything? And how do you continue pushing for accountability when the political and international systems involved are complicated?
Some books entertain you.
Some books inform you.
And some make you look differently at the world around you.
Righting Wrongs belongs in that third category.
After three decades confronting some of the world's most powerful and repressive governments, Kenneth Roth offers a firsthand account of the battles that shaped his career, and the people and principles behind them.
If you've ever wondered whether speaking out can actually make a difference, this book offers a fascinating place to begin.
